Leela Chandran

Attorney, Newburgh

Leela writes plans for people who have never made one and are not sure where to begin, and she makes the first meeting as short as it can be.

She drafts wills, powers of attorney and health care proxies, and names guardians for children. She works in English, Tamil and Hindi, and often meets a parent and an adult child together so the plan is explained once, to both.

A plan for people who have never made one

Many of Leela’s clients are the first in their family to own a home, a business or a retirement account, and nobody has ever sat them down to ask what happens next.

She starts with who: who should decide if you cannot, who should raise the children, who should have the key. The legal words come second, and she explains each one before it goes on a page.

When a parent and an adult child would rather talk in Tamil or Hindi, she does the whole meeting that way and writes the documents in English.
